You know, pictures can show you a lot, although they can also show you very little. Take a look at these pictures.

Can you see the differences?

**Some of these pictures haven’t changed much, others, total opposite.

**Some things about this school haven’t changed since 1970, but on the other hand it’s 2006, something has to change, right?

**People have certainly changed and so have their ideas, visions, and constructions.

**If you would like to see more pictures and find out more about then and now, scroll down this page.

  • No one was injured from the fire although it was devastating to see the school in flames. (top right)

  • This is the remains of the school from the 1983 fire. (bottom right)

  • September 1983, firemen from Caledonia put out the fire that destroyed the then junior high (left)

Just how did Caledonia get its name?

**No one really knows for sure, but the early settlers were from South Carolina with Scottish   decent.  The word "Caledonia" has a word origin that is from Scotland and usually stands for a female name.

**This territory was occupied by Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians. In 1816,  Lowndes County acquired this land under the Choctaw Cession. Records show the first settlement of a white man to be John Stewart.

**Caledonia was considered a wealthy and thriving village of the time. The first notation of the   village being actually referred to as “Caledonia” shows up in 1812. According to survey, we are ten miles north and six miles east of Columbus, MS making the distance sixteen miles from Caledonia to the county seat, Columbus, Mississippi. We are four miles east of the Alabama state line.

**In the early days Caledonia School was the typical one room schoolhouse; however, as the  student load increased, buildings were enlarged or built on the original five-acre piece of land. In about 1907 or 1908, the school was expanded to eleven grades. In 1910 the first high school graduation ceremonies were held, with only four female graduates. Today the school grounds consist of over forty acres, modern buildings, a new cafeteria, football and baseball fields, and approximately 1,300 students and 60 teachers.

Caledonia Tornado of 2008

On January, 10, 2008 we experienced a tornado that shook the school as well as the community.  We stood strong and in the end we made it through by joining together as a "whole".  We were shown outpouring of hands by surrounding communities and for that we will always be grateful.

Caledonia's Centennial Celebration

Caledonia is celebrating its 102 years of existence this year.  The ceremony is held in downtown Caledonia. The celebration consists of fun, food, arts, crafts, and vendors of all kinds.  The existing Mayor, as well as previous mayors, speaks to the crowds along with some elderly people of the community.  It will be a blast and we look forward to having new and exciting celebrations to come here in Caledonia.
